Lesson 1: My vision

LIST
If you could achieve anything or be anything, what would it be?
What do you truly love doing?
·         Doctor.
·         Oncologist.
·         Neurosurgeon.
·         Pilot.
·         Engineering.
·         Scientist.
·         Read.
·         Painting.
·         Learning.
·         Drawing.
·         Spending time with the people I love.
·         Creativity.
·         Medicine.

My vision consists on being a person capable of everything I propose in my life, of becoming a doctor and save people´s life with my knowledge like my dad has done for a long time. The “why” to my vision would be my parents, they have done everything they could in order to make it possible for me to follow my dreams and goals, therefore I want them to see that all their efforts were not in vain. The things I want to achieve are really different to the things I love doing, but that does not mean I am not able to do both lists. In ten years I will have finished university and I will be working at hospitals and maybe I will have a family. If I study oncology I wish that in thirty years I will have developed a cure, a vaccine against cancer or at least an advance in technology against it.
Right now my main goal is to get on one of the best medicine schools in the country and to achieve that I must be very dedicated and study really hard to give the best of me and show to the university that I am a good candidate for them. After getting into medicine school I will have to give up my hours of resting and use them to study. When the medicine career is over I will have to take a test (the ENARM) in order to specialize on any sub career of my interest (right now my interest is on oncology or neurosurgeon), to pass this test many doctors have recommended me to start studying from the beginning of the career and that is what I am probably going to do. Finally, I will be the professional I have always dreamed of becoming.

The obstacles I may encounter might be the stress of the career, I have met many students who have dropped out of medicine school because they can´t put up with the stress of studying the career. I am a person who gets stressed really easily but I know how to handle it, doing activities I like help me to calm down, for example painting, sleeping etc. Maybe, these might not be the solutions to overcome stress in my future but right now that is the only strategy that works for me on present time. The other obstacle I may encounter is that I probably will be in a big city just by myself, without my family. It is not easy to start from zero all alone and it will be hard for me to be away from my family and I will try to overcome it by just keeping on focus my vision, that way I will know that all the sacrifices that my parents have done for me are worth the wait.

Lesson 2: Becoming valuable

On life, the actions we take are the ones who help us to become valuable to others. Solving problems with creative-thinking is of great importance, that is the way we can grow an entrepreneurial mindset. I do not need to create impossible solutions, with simple solutions to everyday problems is more than enough.  First we have to try and solve the community´s problem and then our own problems. On my case, I have it simple, doctors tend to cure ills, if I become a doctor I am going to solve people´s problems. Right now I am focused on finding an opportunity based on a need from our country, all this because we have to offer the community something beneficiary for them for our final project. In order to find a need we need to learn to become empathetic listeners to understand the perspective of others.
Creativity and innovation have a huge role on problem-solving, while working with others on our solution we get the idea that we are able to make a difference and create a change fighting all the barriers we may overcome on our road, that is self-efficacy.
A victim mindset set us back from reaching our goals, we do not need to blame other people from our own problems, we must take action in order to solve these. Thinking positive is the solution to this. If we feel that our actions do not matter, we could simply ask ourselves: what can we do in order to be valuable? When we find the answer, it is important to take action upon it. With this type of mindset, we tend to lose hope easily, but we always have to take in mind that everyone has their own problems and we all can solve them.

In order to be valuable to our community is important that we solve their problem were everyone, including us, are benefited.

Lesson 3: Identifying Potential Barriers

Since a kid my parents have showed me their support, they have done anything they could in order for their children to succeed in life. Therefore, I believe that there are not many external barriers in my life. The only external that I can think of would be the money, my parents have enough money to send me to any part of the country to study medicine on a public school, which is not bad. In medicine, public schools tend to highlight, but there is always the dream of becoming bigger and to study in any country you would like. Unfortunately, my parents cannot send me to other countries, but I am fine with it, maybe in the future I will be able to study abroad.
Right now the main barriers that I have encountered would be the internals, I am in constant fear and I lack of confidence. The fear is something that with experiences I will be able to conquer, right now I am scare of the thing I am not going to be familiar or comfortable in the near future, I am talking about when I leave to study in another state. I am not going to be with my family, I will have to start from zero in an unknown place, the career I picked is not an easy one, and other fears. It is scary to have these thoughts because I am so used to being around my parent, being protected that is scares me that I will be on my own. That is the reason I say that with experiences I will be able to overcome this fears.
The lack of confidence is something I have been dealing with for a very long time, there is always the thought of “What are they going to think about me?”, and even though I know I should not care about what people think of me, I do. In order to overcome this barrier, I should start thinking possible and kill all negative thoughts, instead of worrying about what could go wrong, I must think of all the possible outcomes of a situation so I could be prepared.  Another solution would be to focus on solutions instead of the problems, that way I can think clearly when solving a problem. The last solution is to empower myself with knowledge, personally I believe that if I knowledge gives confidence, reading lots of articles, books, magazines and learning from different resources will help me to gain some confidence. Confidence is a key factor for success, people that are successful tend to have a lot of confidence which help them being entrepreneurs.

Lesson 4
Adriana Domínguez Villanueva (a00226665)
Most students, including myself, have thought that there is at least one class that exists only to fill our schedule.  Truth is that all our classes are of help, after all knowledge is power. It will not harm us to gain a little more knowledge of any topic.
  • 21st Century Science and Technology: Personally, I love science but I am not a big fan of technology. However, the mixture between these two is quite interesting and it is, after all, what is going to be used from now on. It will help me to know more about what are going to be the technologies from the future, how will this affect our lifestyles, and how to react to them. In my case, I am learning about what will be the role of technology on medicine, how will these two complement each other.
  • Math to take decisions: The use of numbers is important, even if we do not like them at all. In this class, we learn to take samples, make predictions, observe behaviour, recollect data, etc. In the future, I have the dream of finding the cure of cancer, and to achieve this I will have to make “experiments” and watch the behaviour of the illness and the treatments on patients.
  • French II: Learning languages stimulates the human body and makes it more elastic, the elasticity is helpful when learning new things or the memory in general. Studying a language often forces you to come up with solutions that are not immediately obvious, and to solve problems in ways that aren’t necessarily “logical”. I acknowledge that in France universities are great, with learning French I might get the opportunity to study there a semester o maybe the residence.
  • Philosophy: I have trouble in here, it is strange to describe this class. Philosophy in general, helps me question everything. The skills learned from philosophy are:
  • The intellectual skills that help me to be more critical, to have an analytical thinking and how to solve problems.
  • In class, we give oral presentations and writing, therefore I am getting better on my communication skills.
Entrepreneurial leadership: I was sceptical at the beginning of the semester, I thought that it was going to be one of those classes, but I surprised myself by actually liking and understanding it. It involves many topics that I am not good at, for example, speaking in public, how to have a mindset that will help us to achieve our goals, investing and not spending, etc. Right now, I am living in a “bubble” where everything is perfect, but that is not the real world, and this class will prepare me to live outside that bubble. Inter-personal skills are the most that we use in this class, we are learning how to take initiative, how to adapt to our environment, work independently and how to solve problems that involves our community.

Lesson 5
Adriana Domínguez Villanueva (a00226665)
Right now, my main goal is to get in medicine school; in order to achieve that, studying is important. If I have learned something from doctors, is that they never quit studying, they must invest their time to study because diseases are continuously mutating, therefore drugs must be improved and doctors need to learn all these factors to help patients. It is necessary to pay for courses, investigation books, subscriptions to health blogs, etc., to be updated, right now I am planning on to invest on courses that will prepare me to get a good grade on the admission exams of the universities I will apply to. This types of course have a high cost but I am positive that the dividends are worth it. Personally, I believe that i am a person who can achieve anything I vision by myself, but I am willing to ask for help because I understand that there are things that can be easier with little help, then I also need to give up my nap hours and invest them to go to counselling with doctors who teach in the university of the state, therefore instead of spending does 3 hours I will use them properly with people that will help me. I have the ease that my dad is a doctor, I can take advantage on that and get in surgeries with him as an observer, with this I will get use to the sight of blood and learn more about the anatomy of the human body.
These investments are going to be useful for my future because I will create a self-discipline, that I am going to strengthen every time I use my habit of study. Using my time wisely is primordial since if I use my discretionary spare time to study the possibility of getting a higher grade is increasing. The fact that I am a person who likes to learn and pay attention, all the investments previously mentioned will help to accomplish my goals.
Right now, I can only think about one thing that is preventing me from making my necessary investments: my impulses. I have learned over the years that I react instead of responding, my impulses take control of me, but it should be the other way around. I am afraid that on my way of achieving my goal I might feel stressed and give up. Hopefully I will learn to control my impulses by focusing on my goals.

Lesson 6
Adriana Domínguez Villanueva (a00226665)
The brand of a company is not the logo of the company, as many people think. It is similar to the reputation it has gained over the time, the actions it takes, the proposals it makes and if they comply them.  Now, the band of a person is built by the reputations we create of ourselves, which includes the way we dress, how our personality is, the activities we are involved in, the actions we take and the trust people give to ourselves.
Yolanda and Sara Jaramillo
When people start a business, most of them are motivated by the income and dividends they are going to get and they forget about the importance of giving themselves a good reputation. At the beginning of their business Yolanda and Sara started to have trouble with their kitchen staff, they were building themselves a bad reputation. Therefore, they had to put themselves in the costumer´s shoes in order to understand what would be the reasons their clients would keep visiting their restaurant.
Ted and Sirena Moore
Their business was an idea to solve problems for others, they started with little and they did not have extravagant ways of cleaning but it filled the basic needs and did the job reliable. They decided to focus on their promises and started to create reliability by taking action and getting the job done on time and at the quoted price, this helped them to create a good brand which costumers relied on. They build they brand through their actions.
Brian Scudamore
Brian´s competition used old trucks and their drivers did not have a uniform, this did not give a “clean” image to the costumers, which is what Brian used in his favour. He created an image that transmitted professionalism by using new trucks and making his drivers courteous and well trained.

How can you use personal branding to transform your student experience and help you accomplish your vision?
First, I need to improve my communication skills, both implicit and explicit. We share our ideas through communication, I need to show confidence and professionalism to gain the reliability of others. If I want to become a doctor I must learn how to explain thing to patients and show them that they can trust on my services. My grammar and speaking must be more proper and I have to start solving problems to start building a good reputation of me.

 Lesson 7
Adriana Dominguez Villanueva (A00226665)
I am interested on helping a foundation named ASD Climber Foundation in Tequepexpan, Jalisco, which for Autism Spectrum Disorders and this foundation is working with families in Jalisco with a child on the autism spectrum. The families involved help with training the volunteers to be able to run a home based on a program of social skill which they called “The Son-Rise Program”. The volunteers do not need a previous experience; free training is provided and the time commitment is 3 hours a week for 6 months.
a. What makes you interested in this cause or issue?
It really amazes me how human brain works and I want to understand what is the explanation of autism, there is no scientific explanation as to what causes it. I have met kids who suffer from this disorder, some of them have higher levels of autism and some others have very love levels of it. I think that by being involved with kids and being capable of interacting with them, teaching them social skills, I will be able to get a little more knowledge.
b. What knowledge, skills, or abilities can you contribute to the cause or to improve the issue?
I can contribute with my positiveness, sometimes a positive mind is needed and more when there are difficult cases, a positive mind is always looking for new ways of approaching solutions and create great changes. Being a person who is responsible, caring and creative I might help those kids with fun activities in which they will feel more comfortable. I have heard that music may calm ASD children, activities involving music might help them get relaxed and flexible. Other skills I can contribute with are the skills that are used in the workplace such as communication, problem solving, teamwork, project planning and organization.
The very little previous knowledge of autism is based on web pages and experiences, but with that I have learned that it is important to be respectful and persistent.
c. How can you get involved in your community supporting this cause or issue?
The foundation is asking for volunteers who are willing to interact with children with autism and teach them, with previous training, how to improve their social skills. I can get involved by creating and developing activities in which they will learn how to communicate and interact with other people.
d. What benefit would your involvement have for you?
I will increase my knowledge based on experience of autism, my responsibilities are going to be more mature and I am going to learn how to be tolerant. By volunteering my self-confidence will increase, also my self-esteem and the self-satisfaction. I think that I will earn pride and identity. Because autism has done to with the area of medicine, I can get experience and meet people interested on the same field.
e. What benefit would your involvement have for the community you are serving?
When helping, there is always a feeling of satisfaction with ourselves, that we were selfless and decided to help other who needed us. I hope that if someday I am able to visit this foundation, I want to make a change on those kids, help them to develop their communication skills. In the future, I would also love to create a hypothesis as to how autism works and how to treat it.
